A Guide To Tiny House Insulation

People tend to make a lot of mistakes while building a tiny house of which one of the most daring mistake is to not insulate according to climate. Insulation is one of the most important aspect of your comfort in a house, be it tiny or conventional. Improper tiny house insulation will directly affect your utility costs, since you’ll be using a lot of energy to keep your house cool or warm. Since a very huge chunk of the population who live in a tiny house prefer to build it themselves or through a builder (which is waaaay better than buying) having a poor idea of insulation or being careless about insulating your home is a big downside that can put you in trouble a big time. Important Questions:

1. Know where are you going to put your tiny house in?
2. Will it be a movable/towable tiny house or the stationary one?
3. It it’s a movable one, which places are you going to travel with it, plan ahead, for you’ll need your insulation to suit it.

APPLIANCES: MAJOR FACTOR IN TINY INSULATION

Mostly the appliances you think you need are the electric heater (small or big depending upon the size of tiny house and budget). But there’s more that you can add, propane heat blankets and fresh water heated hoses if used, they are worth every dollar. Also, wood stoves sometimes perform better given that it has a long chimney pipe that can be installed when stationary. Choosing the right appliances can help you a lot in your tiny house insulation

R-VALUE OF INSULATION

The better the insulation, the more energy efficient the house becomes which means, it will be easier to cool or heat the space in your tiny house. In places of extreme cold, it is better to go with spray foam insulation (interior as well as exterior). Spray foam is sprayed into the midst of 2×4 framing in the walls. In case you are wondering what is R-value: R-value is the capacity of the material to withstand heat flow. The higher the R-value, better is the efficiency.

WINDOWS SHOULD BE PLANNED AHEAD

Since you know that most of your time will be spent in cold weather, it would be a wise decision to install at least double pane windows, or better if it is triple pane. fewer windows in your tiny house, will just help you with the cold.I cannot forget to mention that the position of your windows play a huge role in here, the direction you’ll get your sunlight from, it is better to install or orient your tiny home towards that direction. In northern most part of the country (US) sunlight is received from the south direction, hence it is smart to orient the tiny house in the south direction.

ROOF DESIGN

Your tiny house should be able to withstand the snow loads, if your place is the one that receives snow. I’ve to mention about skylights too, see, if skylights are not installed properly, they may leak, and you wouldn’t want a leaking roof in such a nerve-wavering cold. So better is to avoid skylights or maybe fix them properly.
Another thing, air rises when heated (yeah, we heat the air) and therefore it is good to add extra insulation to your roof.
