GREYWATER IN A TINY HOUSE: HANDLING GREYWATER PERFECTLY

Greywater in a Tiny House: Handling Greywater Perfectly

Tiny houses have been trending over the last couple of years. This can be linked to their increase in popularity worldwide. Actually, they have become part of a social movement where homeowners are now opting to downsize their current living space. Many people are presently joining the tiny house movement. However, each individual has their own reasons for joining this movement. The most common reasons include environmental concerns and financial constraints. In this article, we are going to have a look at everything you need to know about greywater disposal in a tiny house

TYPES OF WASTE WATER

Before deciding to join the tiny house movement, there are many things you need to consider. One of these things involves how you are going to dispose of wastewater. There are two types of wastewater: Greywater and Blackwater. Blackwater is simply the waste that comes from your toilet. If you happen to own an RV, then you can easily dispose of the Blackwater in a dumping station.  Alternatively, you can opt for an incinerator toilet, composting toilet or septic tank. With any of these in place you can deal with the issue once and for all.

Greywater is the non-sewage waste that comes from washing machines, showers or sinks. So long as it has not come into contact with toilet waste, it will probably be grey water. While draining grey water into water bodies would pollute them, trees and plants can use it. This comes as good news to most tiny house owners as they will minimize wastage of water. Additionally they will also get rid of grey water hassle free.

GREYWATER DISPOSAL SYSTEMS

How do I dispose of greywater? This is the question that most tiny house dwellers are asking themselves. However, disposing of greywater does not have to be that hard since there are so many methods you can rely upon. These methods are explained below.
BRANCHED DRAIN SYSTEM

• BRANCHED DRAIN SYSTEM

If you are living in a tiny house on a foundation, you can consider installing a branched drain system. With this one of a kind system, the greywater relies on gravity in order to flow through a drain. The drain is then split into smaller branches until it finally ends up in a mulch basin.  Although they may not be effective, they are an ideal solution for distributing greywater. This is especially the case when you have a wide area to cover.

• BUCKET

One of the simplest ways in which you can reuse greywater is by placing a bucket in your shower or beneath the sink. You will then have to take the water-filled bucket and use it in watering your plants. Alternatively, you can opt to use the water in flushing your tiny house toilet. Unfortunately, this option only works for tiny house owners with a standard toilet.

• WETLAND

At times, the greywater may be too much for your plants. In this scenario, the best possible solution would be creating your own wetland. A good wetland can either be a pond or marshland that redirects the water to where it is needed. Of course, you will need to live in a tiny home on foundation if you are to use this option.

• SURGE TANK

Another option to go with is draining the greywater into a surge tank.  You can then drain it slowly by making use of a hose that should be connected at the bottom of your surge tank. In order for this option to be effective, you will need the best possible way of securing the hose and surge tank.

• GRAVITY-FED FILTRATION TANKS

Tiny house owners who have built or parked it near a slope are an advantage. This is because they can rely on gravity in filtering greywater. All you need to do is position some buckets at intervals. You can then use them to redirect greywater to your preferred location. This is a good option considering the fact that you will not break the bank to put it into place.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE RECYCLING GREYWATER

Constructing and using greywater systems is one of the simplest things that you will ever do. This is because you only have to redirect the wastewater to your garden. However, there are a couple of things you must account for before setting up the greywater system.
THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE RECYCLING GREYWATER

1. RULES AND REGULATIONS CONCERNING GREYWATER

Before setting up a greywater system, you will need to understand the rules and regulations. Since regulations vary with the area, you should contact your local authorities. Once you have every piece of information, you can then have your grey water running outside. Keeping it inside your tiny house will only end up breaking the nutrients in it.

2. AVOID CONTACT WITH ANIMALS AND HUMANS

Greywater is contaminated as it may contain bacteria, soap and home cleaning products. You should thus make sure it does not come into contact with humans or pets when redirecting it to plants. To do this, you will need to keep the greywater in a secure location. Additionally, you can fix all leaks from greywater tanks or buckets. Through this action you will avoid the stress that sets in when your pet drinks contaminated water.

3. USE NATURAL BIODEGRADABLE HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS

After setting up the greywater disposal system, you should opt to use natural biodegradable household products. These may include products such as soaps as they will not pollute the soil outside as is the case with a dye or bleach. Biodegradable products are made from natural and renewable sources. They will, therefore, easily break down into their individual components. Biodegradable products are a good option for people who want to go green.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Grey water disposal systems do not necessarily have to be complicated. However, you need to choose the simplest method from the options available. Additionally, you should go with the cheapest greywater disposal system. Whether you live in a THOW or tiny house on a foundation, you should get a system that works efficiently for you.
