HOW TO GET ELECTRICITY IN A TINY HOUSE

How to Get Electricity In a Tiny House

One of the first question that pops up in the mind when thinking of tiny homes is the how about utilities and electricity in a tiny house? Well, the answer to these questions is easy and available all over the internet. Here are the 4 ways by which you can get electricity in a tiny house.
1. Standard Hook-ups
2. Solar Panels
3. Wind Energy
4. Gas Generator

How do tiny homes get electricity is covered here. There are a lot of ways in which you can power your tiny house not all of which are perfect but since there are already tiny homes out there on the road they must be doing something to get the power, right? Let’s take a look at those options.

1. STANDARD HOOK-UPS

The most standard answer is this, standard Hook-ups. You can get these hook ups if you are in a RV park or in someone’s backyard. Most tiny houses are actually just hooked up to regular local utilities just as a standard home would be. While this is most definitely the simplest option, it may not be very appealing if you are fully committed to the green lifestyle and have a goal of reducing or eliminating your carbon footprint. This is the option selected by almost 70% people to fetch electricity in a tiny house.

2. SOLAR PANELS

There’s a saying that says, “Going Green Costs Green” and that’s true for electricity in a tiny house also. Solar panels are fairly common on tiny homes as a partial power source or as a primary source of power in off-the-grid situations. The trouble is that the price of solar panels is pretty steep. Many owners of tiny homes can’t fork out a big chunk of cash to pay for the panels in the first place.

Plus, it can be tricky to figure out your tiny house’s electric load and the number of solar panels you’ll actually need for sufficient power. If you can afford them, they could be a good choice in areas that see a lot of sun, but in places with lots of cloud cover they may not be able to produce enough energy to power your home. If this is the case, you’ll likely need a backup generator or other power source.

3. WIND

A few owners of tiny homes have installed wind turbines on top of their tiny houses with mixed results. It can be a decent option if you are planning to live off the grid, but only in a reliably windy area. Like solar panels, a small turbine may not be able to generate enough power if the area isn’t consistently windy. In that case, a backup generator or back up solar power will be needed. Mostly, this option should be cool for the people in Netherlands and some parts of europe since that’s the way these guys normally get electricity in a tiny house in their countries.

4. GAS GENERATOR

Tiny home dwellers that live off-grid choose this as their most preferred power source. You might have seen them at some point of time. It costs you gas and some noise too. As long as the access to gas is available, your house is pretty much powered up. It completely fulfills the energy requirements of a tiny house. Several companies produce gas powered generators of varying power generating capabilities. A few popular brands include: Honda, Yamaha and Domestic.
