USING RECLAIMED MATERIALS FOR YOUR TINY HOUSE BUILD

Reclaimed materials for your build

When you decide to build a tiny house, you want it to be different regardless of whether you are using new or reclaimed materials. From the moment you design the floor to when you finish construction, everything needs to be unique. It is only then that you can have a build of your dreams. However, before starting the build, you will need to source for materials. These materials will have an impact on the final look of your tiny home. You should thus take your time until you find the best.

Scouring the shelves of stores can at times be difficult and time consuming. Furthermore, you might only end up getting expensive materials. This can at times work against you since it becomes difficult to save on costs. That is why most people are now opting for reclaimed materials to build their tiny house. With these materials, you are set to save on costs in your build.

WHY RECLAIM?

The building industry has a huge impact on the environment. This is in terms of using natural resources, energy consumption and pollution. On top of this, the costs associated with production and transportation can be tremendous. Using reclaimed materials can reduce these environmental impacts significantly. Furthermore, it prevents the unnecessary production of new materials. In the end, we will live in a world that is free from environmental concerns.
MATERIALS TO RECLAIM

MATERIALS TO RECLAIM

You just do not go out there reclaiming every material you come across. Instead, you will have to look for reclaimable materials that will work for your build. In most cases, they will include household stuffs for your tiny house. This can be items like furniture, sinks, kitchen counters and flooring. You can also consider reclaiming the interior and exterior siding.  Whatever you choose, make sure they are good to go with.

It is advisable for you to avoid reclaiming materials that need installation. This may include the plumbing, insulation and wiring systems. Reclaiming these materials may only increase the maintenance costs. You should thus consider getting new ones if they are to work efficiently. Other materials you should not reclaim include:

  • Operable windows
  • Trailer
  • Structural lumber
  • Roofing
  • Shower pans

TIPS AND TRICKS

If you are hoping to save money on your build budget, you should consider reclaiming. This does not mean doing anything you feel like. Instead, take your time to think about what you need and what you don’t. Here are some tips and tricks of using reclaimed materials for your build.

1. GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO ARE PATIENT

You might save lots of money by using reclaimed materials. However, it will take some time before you find the right materials. You will, therefore, have to be patient if you are to find the materials you need. Your time is worth something too, so put this into consideration.  Go over everything you may need before making the decision to buy. It is only then that you will find the perfect materials for your build.

2. NEVER PAY FOR PALLETS

Many companies give pallets away for free. Therefore, purchasing them will only be a waste of your hard-earned money. To avoid incurring more, you should look for a company that gives pallets free of charge. Only go with heat treated pallets, which are marked “HT’. Pallets marked “MB” are not a good option as they are treated with methyl bromide.

3. LEARN TO SAY NO

Perhaps the most difficult thing to do is turn down free things or an offer.  But when building your tiny home, you will need quality. Not all free materials guarantee quality. Therefore, do not buy anything if it will eventually go to waste. Only buy when sure of getting the expected results from the material. It is only then that you can be able to build the tiny house of your dreams.

4. BE PRESENT

Most reclaimed stores change their stock frequently. This will mean new materials that were not present in your previous visit. There is no wrong in showing up on a regular basis and checking their inventory. If your search is specific, it may take you many trips to find the materials. With patience and regular visits, you will never miss out on what you want.

5. GET CREATIVE

It is important to think about how you are going to use reclaimed materials. Opening your mind to these thoughts will make your decision easier. Furthermore, you will get different methods of using the reclaimed material.  For instance, you can make the base of a tabletop using metal lockers that are tipped sideways. Whatever you do, be creative in all your dealings if you are design a home that fits your definition of tiny living.

6. GET COMFORTABLE WITH TALKING AND ASKING PEOPLE QUESTIONS

Never shy away from asking people the questions you have in mind. After all, you are going to spend your entire life in the tiny house. Consider asking fellow tiny house owners the things you need to know about reclaimed materials. The worst they can do is say no.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Ongoing rapid development means many old houses are being demolished. Reusing materials from these buildings is an important component of sustainable development. To make it even better, you will have made an impact on the environment. So do not be afraid to reclaim materials when building your tiny house.
