WHAT IS A TINY HOUSE: HERE ARE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

As the name suggests, it a home that is small in space. It abandons the general idea of a home to be big (2000-5000 square feet) and instead use the space more efficiently and use only the space that is required. Normally, the size of a tiny house is under 1000 square feet. However, 1000 is still too large for a tiny home, normally it ranges between 90 square feet – 900 square feet. Also remember that tiny house and small house terms are used interchangeably.

Tiny Home can be categorized into 3 parts:
1. Tiny Home on trailer
2. Tiny home on ground
3. Small House on foundation

1. TINY HOME ON TRAILER

A tiny home can be made movable if it is built on a trailer. A tiny home which is built on a trailer is towed by an SUV or truck. The sizes of trailers are fixed (primarily the width of the trailer is fixed) and length of the trailer can vary according to the states you are in. the width is normally fixed to 8 feet. A normal and most commonly seen trailer size is 8’ x 20’, which means 8’ in width and 20’ in length.

This kind of tiny home is usually used by the enthusiasts who want to go camping and take their home with it. While some people call it their home itself and don’t have any permanent house whereas for some it is their vacation or camping house. This house can easily live One person and can be extended for a couple. It usually contains a bed (loft), a kitchen, a bathroom and a great room.

2. TINY HOUSE ON FOUNDATION

This kind of tiny house cannot be moved or towed and is normally fixed to the ground on a foundation. This type is also built on a trailer and is comparatively bigger in size. The size of this kind of tiny house ranges from 150 – 600 square feet. Such kind of tiny house is usually placed on a land which can be your backyard or farmhouse or in the isolation of woods (if permitting to zoning laws). There’s no restriction of width or length in such a tiny house. However, pay attention to the fact that trailers of such size may not be readily available and you may need to get one fabricated for your customized use. Tiny house on foundation can easily accommodate a couple and be extended to support your kids too. It can easily stomach 1-2 beds (usually one loft bed), one bathroom, a kitchen and a great room.

3. SMALL HOUSE ON FOUNDATION

This house is just your regular house but rather compact in size. The size of this kind of tiny house is limited to 1000 square feet. this small house is built on a foundation and is obviously immovable. This kind of house can comfortably live a family of 4-6 and can accommodate 2-3 bedrooms and a kitchen with bathrooms. However, there are no regulation that enforce this. All the sizes mentioned in this article are just the common trends noticed in the segment.

WHY TINY HOUSE GOT POPULAR

The widespread popularity of a tiny House is a product of the Tiny House Movement which gained a lot of traction after the economic recession of 2008. The average size of the home from 2001-2008 was almost 2700 square feet, while in 1980 it was about 1780 square feet. So, what has happened is, the number of inhabitants in a home went down and the size of the home went up significantly. Tiny house movement was gaining popularity in 1990s and 2007-08 came to be the final nail in the coffin.

The people who were inspired by the idea of Tiny House or Small homes but couldn’t muster up the courage to do it, could now finally do it, rather say the situation forced them to do it.The wheels that drives the tiny house movement is the desire for modesty, strive for conservation, eco-friendly nature, self-sufficiency and need for adventure. Tiny home has gained a lot of traction in North America and Europe while some parts of Japan has also shown interest in the tiny home movement. The primary reason for Japanese to dwell into small houses is the mountainous cost of land and living.

ISSUES

As the tiny house movement gained popularity, there was a remarkable increase in the number of professional and amateur builders and architects. The issue here is with the case of amateur architects and builders who didn’t have enough knowledge and experience to do what they are doing which has often landed themselves or their clients in grave problems.

Another issue that takes a toll on the tiny home enthusiasts is the regulations regarding the placement of tiny house. A tiny house is essentially considered a Recreational vehicle (RV as we call it). An RV cannot be a permanent residence, hence there’s one problem. Now if you go to RV parks, they won’t let you enter as they allow only the RVs made by certain manufacturers or companies and are intolerant towards tiny house dwellers. In some states, you cannot park it in your very own land since it will then be called camping and the rules are against camping in your own lot where’s home.
